...So What's Your Excuse?

I'm not sure what the history
of "excuses" is, except to
know that a majority of the
time excuses equal some sort
of self-dishonesty. Infact
someone once told me that
an excuse is a well planned
lie. Period!

I think they're part of what we think we "should do" vs. being a "must do"! They come from us not being able to take our own "no's". They're what we say to people so that we "don't hurt their feelings". They are also what we say so that others
don't hurt us. Excuses are part of what we're tolerating in
our life that we know we shouldn't and yet feel we must rationalise it.

If we look it again one can say excuse is a self-destructive
alibi for having failed to do something, especially when it
involves attaining a goal. Instead of trying to persevere in
finding ways to continue achieving a goal, some of us resort
to excuses.Hm, the list goes on and on...

So what's your own excuse today?

A Word Of Advice:If you always have a lot of excuses, you should
strive more to overcome them because you'll be able to double your
achievement then. When the odds are greater, the prize gets much bigger.
After all the efforts you have exerted, the prize of success shall be
a well-deserved one. The fact is "QUIT GIVING EXCUSES" no matter how
reasonable you think they are.

For sure excuse-making is a big obstacle to achievement.

A related topic, and difficult one, is that it's possible to go all out but be defeated. Severe disablility, poverty, war - external factors truly do ruin some lives. In those conditions the non-excuse giver can have tendencies to feel like a failure and blame himself for not succeeding - despite having done everything inside his or her own power.

So maybe that's the other extreme - people who don't cut themselves any slack even when, realistically, that's not even what they're doing. It's just a matter of acknowledging that while there are some things under our control, there are some things that are not.

Sometimes is giving an excuse better than telling a lie. dont know.overall I think if you have an excuse for everything no one is going to trust you or believe your excuse anymore.

I try as much as possible not to give excuses but they are sometimes necessary. I agreec with you though that one has to check themselves if it becomes chronic

I do give excuses without thinking. Very bad habit, I'm working on it though.

Darius, u sure hv a way of analysing things that make me think again, ur rite u know, reminds me of a song that says change the things u can and leave the ones u can't.

Lalitha, well I dnt believe in either giving excuse or telling a lie, ur sure rite, when excuses become a habit u'll end up hurting only urself more than anybody b/c pple will stop trusting u.

That the American society appreciates artists and artistes more than the Nigerian society. And the talented ones who are suffering and dying of poverty in Nigeria would have been saved in America and England.

Why are most of the successful Nigerian writers like Buchi Emechetta, Ben Okri, Helon Habila, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Seffi Atta, Diana Evans and the older ones prefer to reside in America and the UK and not struggling and suffering with their fellow Nigerian writers in Nigeria?

Why do we have only about two million Nigerians with access to the Internet when over 50 million of the over 135 million Nigerians are adults? And over 20 million are literate enough to browze and surf online?

Why are the majority of those from the oil producing states in Nigeria suffering and dying in abject poverty while the rest are enjoying their oil wealth without contributing much to the Nigerian economy?

Do you want me to continue to tell you the good reasons for the excuses of the poor masses who are deprived and robbed of the means of survival and doing what they have the talents and skills to do best and become fulfilled in life?

Some excuses are justified and valid.

God bless.
